Question
Should my water softener be plumed to the whole house Mine is plumed to the cold side going into the hot water heater When I turn the by pass valve to service it just turns the hot water off to the hot side of the sinks and shower Is this right I am having a problem with rust staining by toilet tank fixtures
Answer
It is perfectly normal to only have soft water to the water heater. It is done when people don't want the slippery feeling in the shower or those who do not want extra salt in the drinking water. You would still have scale forming on things like glasses, fixture and the shower glass and walls, but it is less than what would be without it. I dont know of people doing that routinely any longer and many washer soaps are for cold water now and that water is better soft. There is no harm in only hot water but better to do the hot and cold. If you are using the softener to remove rust (iron) then softening the cold water is also necessary.
